Do you ever look back on your life and think, “how am I alive?” I find myself saying this phrase almost daily. It’s not that I actively go out and look for trouble, trouble just seems to find me. Sometimes I’m thankful it happens to me because it gives me great stories to tell people, but on the other hand, something bad could happen.
For example, while traveling in Hamburg alone I went to Reeperbahn, which is the red light district. I didn’t even know Hamburg had a red light district. Before I tell the story I would like to say that everyone should visit Reeperbahn because it’s a very interesting place. There are about seven districts in Hamburg and each has a different characteristic about it. Reeperbahn, other than being famous for prostitution and drugs, is where The Beatles started performing. There are several famous bars that still play live music and have memorabilia of them.
So let’s begin the story. I was only in Hamburg for two full days and spent the majority of the day walking around the city alone. I decided to go to Reeperbahn at around 8 pm, since it was early and I could get back before it got too late. After I all, I was in a red district alone; this was me trying to be responsible. After taking the S-bahn, I walked around just taking in the lights and all the titty bars that lined the streets. Truly, I have never seen something like this before, not even in Las Vegas. Since it was early people were on the street trying to sell tickets for later on in the night. I was walking around trying to find a bar and just people watch. I ended up finding a 99 cent bar, where everything was indeed 99 cents, it was beautiful.
Since I was was alone and the bar was empty, I ended up making friends with the bartender He asked if I was waiting and I told him I was alone. He then advised me to be safe because I was alone, the look he gave me was slightly concerning too. After walking around alone I saw what he meant. I kept getting approached by random men; the creepiest one was this guy who came up to me and tried to talk to me in German and when he realized I didn’t understand, he walked back across the street to another group of guys and they all kept staring at me.
I also kept getting the feeling that I was followed, so I decided to leave. Looking back I probably wasn’t but I was slightly buzzed, alone at night and in a questionable district. I only had a few beers and left around 10. Again I would like to say this was being responsible. While I was waiting at the metro for by train, some guy approached me and started talking to me. Nothing like this had happened to me before. He walked out of the train and just sat down next to me and started talking. I couldn’t help but laugh cause it was so random. He kept asking me for my number and to go grab some drinks with him but I said no. Not that I need a reason but the most obvious one being that I was ALONE in Reeperbahn. I gave him my number (fake one) and I shook his hand to say goodbye.. About 20 seconds after he left, a security guard came up to me speaking in German and the only words I could understand was “drug.” My initial response was “I’m sorry, what?!” He said in very broken English that he thought the guy was a drug dealer and he thought the guy had sold me something. He started aggressively pointing at me saying “drugs, drugs, drugs!” I immediately started panicking and was trying to explain the situation. The officer just kind of looked at me and walked away. I was scared that he was going to give me a ticket but he never came back.
Then on the metro I had to pee so bad that I had to get off at random stop and was looking for a bathroom. It ended up being some sort of mall and I spent 5 minutes trying to find a bathroom. I ended up in some backroom stocking place before I turned back to the main area. I found the bathroom, which was by the freaking entrance, but I had forgot that in Germany you have to pay to use a public bathroom. I only had pounds and a homeless man with no teeth gave me his ticket to use the bathroom, but it didn’t work and I couldn’t find enough change. I was SWEATING, I legit thought I was gonna have an accident right there. But then these random teenage boys came through speaking German and I think told me to jump the gate and I did. When I came out they were speaking a different language again to me and they we said goodbye. When I got back to the hostal everyone was getting ready to go out to Reeperbahn and tried to get me to go back out with them. I said no and was happily in bed by midnight.
My last day in Hamburg was a lot calmer than this night. However it still makes for a good story, and what’s the point of traveling if you don’t have a story to tell. I know this was a lengthy post, but let me know if you liked it and if you wanna hear about more stupid stuff that happens to me. I also wanna hear some of your experiences, What’s the sketchiest thing that has happened to you?
